Volume 1: Perspective
The first edition of Echolalia asks us to consider the fluidity of perspectives, and the reciprocal influence we have with it.
Perspective, an attitude towards the way in which we regard something or someone, is a very polarizing aspect in our lives. It can be subjective or objective; personal or public; indisputable or questionable…yet despite this, it essentially takes shape in and influences every aspect of our lives. From the broader issues such as who we vote for and which policies we value, to the smaller issues such as which brand of cereal we pick up at the grocery store and which cell-service provider we choose to buy from.
However, modern day discourse and rhetoric often overlooks the fundamental aspect of one’s perspectives: How do our perspectives come to be and how can they change over time? The malleability and flexibility of our perspectives do not evolve without clauses. Perspectives change be it due to our relationships with one another, our experiences in life, time, or more commonly, a culmination of all those factors and many more.
The first edition seeks to address this very fact: While our perspectives are shaped from our experiences and, as a result, shape our actions, these choices shape our perspectives in return. Drawing from our roots, we hope to highlight the various perspectives within the diverse community UCI is home to. Our focus lay not only in what these perspectives are but where they come from and how they continue to evolve.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
