The flowers died on Monday

Poetry by Ally Williams

On Wednesday, they were new- fresh and happy

A gift to the world, their happiness spread like wildfire

beautiful in the purest form,

joyful in the light.

On Thursday they were whisked from their home,

A new step

towards what seemed like grand purpose

Fearless to the challenge, they accepted

their fate,

provided by Kindness

held by Destiny.

On Friday, they sat

In their new home they provided pleasant aromas and aesthetics

Pleased to be apart of something bigger than themselves,

content with what they’ve created for Others.

On Saturday, they noticed

a switch, slight but detectable

While they contributed as much as they could,

the same energy that was once there

had disappeared.

Perhaps it was just a phase.

On Sunday,

they could no longer ignore it,

Desperate for nutrients that Kindness now withheld .

They reached out to the Sun,

only to realize that the clouds have come.

Kindness was nowhere to be found.

Now the fight to keep going

was a losing one.

Soon came Monday

and the flowers were on the edge.

Gone was the peace and love

that they cherished.

They tried to go back to their purpose, but without roots

they found none.

Muddy waters choked their stems,

and darkness drained them of life.

Knowing this was the end, they used the last of their energy

to reach for something, anything to keep their legacy alive.

The flowers died

on Monday.

But

On Tuesday,

their efforts were not all lost, for when they were found

Hope buried them in the ground, where they returned

To their passion, purpose.

Their Destiny had not yet given up.

They made new roots, and there from Hope and Destiny

They were reborn.

Artist Statement: I wrote this piece this past summer with the intention of turning it into a short film and when I heard about the theme for this year, I thought this would be a good fit for it. This poem is all about love within a relationship and this is just a glimpse into what it could look like for an individual. This idea came to me after seeing a prompt on Pinterest but I forgot to save it before closing out the app so I don’t have it anymore.
