frequently asked questions

Is Echolalia currently taking any applications?

No, we are not currently taking applications. Our applications for Editors typically open at the beginning of Fall quarter, Contributor applications open Fall and Winter quarter, and Print Team applications open Winter quarter.

Can I apply for both Contributor and Editor positions?

Yes! Editor and Contributor selections are conducted largely independently from one another. However, given limited space and resources, there may be situations where an applicant must pick their preference of the two—we want to make sure everyone gets what they want, when possible!

How does the editing process work? Will it be a lot of work?

Echolalia strives to make the editing process as collaborative as possible. While we cannot quantify the workload, we can assure that it is a flexible process for our Editor-Contributor pairs.

If selected as a Contributor, you will meet with an Editor to discuss the trajectory of your piece in relation to the theme and vision of the journal. From there, you will regularly be given feedback and the opportunity to make as many or as little edits.

If selected as an Editor, you will meet with at least one assigned Contributor to discuss their piece. The focus should largely be on the piece’s addressal of our theme, but comments on grammar, structure, and other typical workshop elements are welcome. You are always encouraged to reach out to your Managing Editor for help.

There are no set number of hours, days, or times you have to work on your piece or meet with your pair member.

Why do I need to remove my name from my submissions?

We’d like to maintain a Contributor’s anonymity when evaluating submissions. By not associating the work with a person who submitted, we hope to approach it with as objective of a lens possible, focusing on the work and its connection to our theme instead of any existing relationship with the Contributor.

I want to submit, but do not know if my work fits within the guidelines. What should I do?

Please email echolalia.journal@gmail.com! We would be more than happy to help clarify any questions regarding your submission.

I made edits to my work but have already submitted. Can I submit again?

Yes! Please send your updated submission to echolalia.journal@gmail.com; please, do not resubmit through the form. However, to avoid excessive updates, please ensure that you are satisfied with your work prior to submitting. There will be some time to work on it during our editing process!

Can I get an extension on my Contributor/Editor application?

If you feel you need an extension, please email echolalia.journal@gmail.com with a reason for an extension request.

How can I get a physical journal copy of one of Echolalia‘s volumes?

Unfortunately, Echolalia has only had the resources to order a limited number of copies for our volumes that make it to physical print. The amount ordered is based off of how many are ordered in advance, with order forms usually opening in April; we also order a few extra, just in case anyone would like to purchase one past the initial due date.

If you are interested in purchasing a physical copy for the current volume, look for an announcement concerning the order form and feel free to fill it out. If there is no announcement, wait for one concerning the physical journal status around April or earlier.

If you are interested in purchasing a copy for a previous volume, or the time for ordering the current volume has elapsed, feel free to reach out through our email or Instagram. We may not be able to guarantee a copy but, if there are any left in stock, we will be happy to organize an exchange.

For pick-up, most people will receive their copy at our Launch Party, an annual celebration of our work at the end of the academic year. Outside of this, please reach out to us through email, Instagram, or Discord to arrange a time to pick up your copy.

I have a question that isn’t answered here. How can I learn more?

Feel free to email echolalia.journal@gmail.com with your question and one of our Board members will respond ASAP! You are also welcome to ask in our Discord.
